SEXUAL OFFENSES ATTORNEY IN DALLAS, TEXAS

WHAT IS THE SENTENCE FOR SEX CRIMES IN TEXAS?

A sex crime is defined as a criminal offense to knowingly cause or force another person to engage in an unwanted sex act. There are many different types of sex crimes, such as sexual assault (rape), aggravated sexual assault, child sex crimes, online solicitation of a minor, indecency with a child, child pornography, prostitution, voyeurism, public lewdness, and indecent exposure. Most sex crimes are considered felonies under Texas law.

Felonies such as sexual assault, aggravated sexual assault, and indecency with a child are punishable by the following:

  • Felony in the first degree — Prison sentence of 5 years to life; fine of up to $10,000

  • Felony in the second degree — Prison sentence of 2 to 20 years; fine of up to $10,000

  • Felony in the third degree — Prison sentence of 2 to 10 years; fine of up to $10,000

  • State jail felony — Jail sentence of 180 days to 2 years; fine of up to $10,000

Misdemeanors such as prostitution, indecent exposure, and public lewdness are punishable by the following:

  • Class A misdemeanor — Jail sentence of up to one year; fine of up to $4,000

  • Class B misdemeanor — Jail sentence of up to 180 days; fine of up to $2,000

  • Class C misdemeanor — Fine of up to $500

In addition to jail or prison time and fines, a conviction will also result in registration as a sex offender—potentially for the rest of your life. Being a registered sex offender can make it extremely hard to gain employment, find housing, and live a normal life.

Unfortunately, mere accusations can make you appear guilty in the eyes of the public and media—without ever stepping foot inside a court of law.
